A voxel sandbox game on Linux: native, Vulkan, a round planet

Linux players rarely get a new 3D indie game on day one, natively. Openworld ships one: a plain x86-64 binary, no Wine, no Proton, Vulkan all the way. Here's what to install for your distribution, how to check your GPU in one command, and where the game puts its files.

In short

  • Not open source — said plainly.
  • Native x86-64 build: a .tar.gz with one executable, Openworld. No Wine, no Proton.
  • You need Vulkan 1.0 drivers (recent Mesa, or NVIDIA's), plus libcurl — both usually already there.
  • Built for recent distributions (Ubuntu 20.04 era and newer). X11 or Wayland, both work.
  • Linux, Mac and Windows players share the same servers — and you can host one on your Linux box.

Is there a native voxel sandbox for Linux?

New 3D games rarely ship a native Linux build on day one, and most voxel games lean on a compatibility layer or a heavy runtime. What's rare is a sandbox built natively for Linux from the start, on Vulkan.

Openworld is a voxel sandbox on a whole, round planet — walk straight and you come back to where you started — under a real sky with Moon phases and eclipses, all the way to the Sun, by way of the Moon and the planets. It runs on Linux, Windows and Mac (native Apple Silicon), and the Linux build is a first-class citizen: same version, same day, same servers.

The install on Linux: the download, the terminal (tar, then ./Openworld), the launcher, then the planet. Click a step to jump to it — and click the polar bear.

Where do I get the Linux build?

From the official site only: one .tar.gz, no package repository, no store.

Install on Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora or Arch

The download is the same for every distribution: one archive with one executable. That program is the updater: it installs the launcher, the launcher installs the game, and from then on everything updates itself.

  1. 1

    Extract the archive

Download it, then in a terminal: tar xzf Openworld-linux-x64.tar.gz.

  2. 2

    Run it

./Openworld — if it refuses, chmod +x Openworld first. The first run copies itself to ~/.openworld/updater/ and adds Openworld to your applications menu, with its icon.

  3. 3

    Account, code, PLAY

The launcher opens and installs the game. Create your account, confirm your email and pick your username. Then PLAY.

tar xzf Openworld-linux-x64.tar.gz
./Openworld
Download, extract and run, in the folder where the archive landed.

The packages, by distribution

The game is linked statically: it only asks your system for the C library, libcurl, zlib and the Vulkan loader, plus your GPU's Vulkan driver. Most desktops already have all of it. If not, one line per family (NVIDIA's proprietary driver brings its own Vulkan support):

sudo apt install libvulkan1 mesa-vulkan-drivers vulkan-tools libcurl4
Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS and the Debian family.
sudo dnf install vulkan-loader mesa-vulkan-drivers vulkan-tools libcurl
Fedora.
sudo pacman -S vulkan-icd-loader vulkan-tools
Arch, Manjaro, EndeavourOS: then your driver, vulkan-radeon (AMD), vulkan-intel (Intel) or nvidia-utils (NVIDIA).
vulkaninfo --summary
You want 1.3 or higher next to your GPU.

Graphics card, Vulkan and settings

Openworld draws with Vulkan 1.0 — there is no OpenGL fallback. Recent Mesa drivers (AMD and Intel) and NVIDIA's driver both qualify. Then it's a matter of settings, as on the other systems: Graphics quality (Options → Display) goes from Low to Extreme, and Render distance is the slider that weighs the most on integrated graphics.

  • x86-64the Linux build
  • 1.3the Vulkan version you need
  • 5system libraries it links to, nothing more
  • 2.38the newest glibc symbols it may use
  • X11 or Wayland: the game's window layer (SDL) loads either one when it starts. Nothing to choose.
  • Laptop with two GPUs: the game takes the first graphics device Vulkan offers it. With Mesa, DRI_PRIME=1 in front of the command asks for the other one; on NVIDIA Optimus setups, distributions provide prime-run for the same purpose.
  • Press F3 for the frame rate, F11 for full screen.
  • Controls are keyboard and mouse, remappable in Options → Controls. There's no gamepad support yet, which also means the Steam Deck isn't a target for now.

Where the files go

Everything stays in your home folder; nothing is written outside it, and no sudo is ever needed by the game itself.

  • ~/.openworld — the updater (updater/Openworld), the launcher, the installed game versions, your settings, worlds and screenshots.
  • ~/.local/share/applications/openworld.desktop and its icon in ~/.local/share/icons/ — the menu entry.
  • ~/.config/autostart/openworld-updater.desktop — quietly updates the launcher when you log in. Don't want it? Untick Start Openworld with my computer in the launcher's Settings.

To uninstall: delete ~/.openworld, the .desktop files and the icon. That's the whole footprint.

Host a server on your Linux box

Linux is also home turf for servers. Openworld has a dedicated server for Linux, Windows and Mac, downloadable from the launcher, with an online mode (players sign in with their Openworld account) and an offline mode for a local network. Everything is explained in how to host your own Openworld server on Linux. And to bring your Mac and Windows friends in, read playing with friends on other platforms.

Questions

How do I get Openworld on Linux?

Download the .tar.gz from the official site, then create your account in the launcher.

Is Openworld open source?

No. It has a native Linux build, but its source code isn't published.

Does Openworld run on the Steam Deck?

It's not a target for now: the game has no gamepad support yet and is played with keyboard and mouse.

Wayland or X11?

Both. The game's window layer loads whichever your session uses.

Which distributions are supported?

Any recent x86-64 distribution with Vulkan 1.0 drivers: the build is made on an Ubuntu 20.04 base, so Ubuntu 20.04+, Mint 20+, current Fedora and Arch are the safe bet.

Can Linux players join Mac and Windows friends?

Yes: every platform joins the same servers. See playing with friends, or host the server yourself.

What do I need to install?

Usually nothing: a Vulkan driver (Mesa or NVIDIA) and libcurl, which most desktops already have. Download the game.

Is Openworld out?

Yes. Openworld has been playable since the first day of its alpha. Download it for Mac, Windows or Linux, create your account in the launcher and play: there is no release date to wait for.

Is Openworld coming to Steam?

Openworld isn't on Steam or any other store, and you don't need one: you download the game from this site, today, and its launcher keeps it up to date.

Alpha, beta, official version: what does it mean?

Alpha: the game is playable and grows with every update; things move and sometimes break. When it is more stable, it becomes a beta, then its official version. It's the same game all the way: you play now, and the launcher installs each new version by itself.

Why play during the alpha?

You play right away, you watch the game grow update after update, and the alpha costs less than the official version will.

macOS says the app “wasn't opened”

Normal for now: the app doesn't have its Apple certificate yet. Click Done, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down to Openworld and click Open Anyway. Just once.

Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”

The installer doesn't have its certificate yet. Click More info, then Run anyway.

And on Linux?

Extract the archive and run the program:

tar xzf Openworld-linux-x64.tar.gz && ./Openworld

You need a Vulkan graphics driver (Mesa or NVIDIA) and glibc 2.31 or newer (Ubuntu 20.04, Debian 11, Fedora 32 or newer).

What kind of machine do I need?

A Vulkan-capable graphics card (on a Mac, macOS 11 or newer). The game adjusts its view distance and weather quality: a recent laptop is enough.

The launcher doesn't open?

Update your graphics driver from NVIDIA's, AMD's or Intel's website. On a laptop with two graphics cards, update both. On Linux, install the Mesa Vulkan drivers (mesa-vulkan-drivers).

It's downloading!

Install Openworld

The game doesn't have its Apple and Microsoft certificates yet: your computer will be suspicious the first time you launch it. That's normal, here's how to tell it everything's fine. Just once.

  1. 1

    Open Openworld.dmg

Drag Openworld into the Applications folder, then launch it from Applications.

  2. 2

    macOS refuses: click “Done”

    Definitely not “Move to Trash”.

  3. 3

System Settings → Privacy & Security

Scroll down to “Openworld was blocked”, click Open Anyway and confirm (password or Touch ID).

  4. 4

    Relaunch Openworld

Click Open one last time. That's it: macOS won't ask again.

Comfortable with Terminal?
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Openworld.app

Then launch Openworld as usual.
