Log
The wood or the bark of a tree: the first thing you gather, the start of planks, sticks, fire and tools.
In the game
How to get it
Hit a tree trunk with your bare hand: it comes away one voxel (a 25 cm cube) at a time. An axe takes a whole 1 m cube at once.
What it is for
Planks (a log cell gives 32 voxels of planks of its own wood), the campfire, charcoal in the Furnace, the chest, fuel.
Why it exists
Wood grows everywhere and asks for no tool: it is the first material of every new world.
The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).
A log is any piece of a tree trunk: the wood itself or its bark. Every tree of the Earth gives logs -- oaks, birches, spruces, redwoods, palms, jungle kapoks and the rest -- and the grid treats them all as "any log".
How to get it
- Bare hand: aim at a trunk and hold the left button. The hand breaks one voxel (a 25 cm cube) at a time; wood takes about half a second per voxel.
- A craft cell needs 16 voxels of raw matter (a quarter of a 1 m block), so a few seconds of punching give your first planks.
- An axe cuts the aligned 1 m cube of wood plus a rough edge around it, many times faster.
- Trunks, stumps, fallen branches and coconuts are all bark or wood: there are no planks in nature.
What it is for
| Use | Recipe |
|---|---|
| Planks | 1 cell of log: 32 voxels of planks of that tree's wood |
| Campfire | 3 cells of log in a row under 3 sticks |
| Chest | 8 cells of wood or planks around an empty middle |
| Charcoal | logs in the Furnace: 16 voxels give 16 charcoal in 4 s |
| Fuel | 12 s of fire per cubic metre in a furnace, a campfire or a fireplace |
Tips
The trunks of every tree species: oak, birch, spruce, redwood... Broken by hand, sawn into planks: the start of everything.
