Saturn and Titan

Saturn's rings across the sky; on Titan an orange haze, seas, lakes and rain of liquid methane, dunes of dark sand, and air so thick that wings fly.

In the game

How to get it

Phase 3: land on Titan, Saturn's great moon. The ring collector works Saturn's rings from your ship.

What it is for

Kronite from the rings; Titan's methane, the fuel of the far reaches; and flight with wings in its thick air.

Why it exists

Extreme cold, and methane in place of water everywhere -- a world with seas, rain and wind, all of them strange.

The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).

Titan, Saturn's moon, is the only other world with seas -- of methane, under a sky of orange haze.

Titan's lands

  • Methane seas and lakes around the poles, their level the same everywhere; drowned valleys where the seas reach inland.
  • Dunes of dark organic sand on the equator, 12 to 24 m tall, running east-west, 260 m apart, silt in the corridors.
  • Tholin plains of orange silt and ice cobbles; highlands of water-ice bedrock, hard as granite at -180 °C.
  • The great sea near the north pole, 7 km round, the same on every world: on the islet at its middle, the colonists' wrecked probe (Probe recorder; the navigation table's landing place Probe wreck).

Methane

The lakes are liquid methane: it runs and swims like water, and a Bucket takes it. Boats float on it. Now and then a methane rain falls: big amber drops, slowly, in the thick air.

Flying

Titan's air is 4.4 times denser than the Earth's and its gravity a seventh: a Wingsuit lifts almost as much as you weigh, and Space beats the wings -- you fly, climb and cruise. A Paraglider sinks half as fast. See Titan: flying with wings.

The sky

An orange haze by day, a brown dusk; Saturn and its rings stand in it.
