How to get it

Find a cave entrance (a hillside opening or a sinkhole) or dig down. Ore boulders on the ground mark a giant lode below; a bitumen puddle marks oil; geodes and raisonite hide deeper.

What it is for

Every ore of the game is underground: coal and iron near the surface, gold, titanium and gems deep down.

Why it exists

The world is as deep as it is wide: the best things are found by those who look.

The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).

The underground of Openworld is a world of its own.

Caves

  • Galleries on five connected levels, twisting tunnels, caverns held up by pillars, ravines, flooded halls and lava deep down.
  • Entrances are rare: look for openings in hillsides and for sinkholes, or dig your own way.
  • Without a torch a cave is pitch black: bring torches -- they also keep monsters from appearing around you.
  • Monsters come to the noise of breaking blocks: see Monsters of the night.

What lies where

DepthWhat you find
2 to 48 msmall veins in every cave: coal, iron, copper, a little bauxite
3 to 70 mcoal veins
10 to 140 miron veins
20 to 160 mGeodes: crystal, quartz and gems
35 to 110 mraisonite pockets (an iron pickaxe or better)
70 to 200 mgold; titanium from 90 m, gems from 100 m

See Ores of the Earth for every ore.

Giant lodes

Huge deposits, 40 to 120 m wide, with a core of pure ore. Coal, iron, copper and bauxite lodes lie 250 to 700 m from the world's start; gold, titanium, gem, lithium, saltpetre, oil and uranium lodes within 1.5 km; dozens more across the planet. Ore boulders of 2 to 4 m on the ground above mark them from afar.

Oil

A bitumen puddle on the ground means oil below: dig down along the black conduit to the oil lens. Bitumen lit with a torch burns for good. See Crude oil.
