Coal
Black coal ore: the fuel of furnaces, the reducer that turns ore into metal, and four torches a voxel.
In the game
How to get it
The most common ore: veins from 3 to 70 m, small veins in nearly every cave near the surface, and two giant coal lodes 250 to 700 m from the start.
What it is for
Fuel (60 s of fire per cubic metre), the Furnace's reducer (4 for an iron ingot, 8 for titanium), torches (a voxel on a stick), steel.
Why it exists
No fire without fuel, no metal without coal: it is the first thing to look for underground.
The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).
Coal is the first ore you will mine and the one you will use most.
Where to find it
- Cave veins: in the top 48 m, coal is about a third of the ore in cave walls.
- Veins from 3 to 70 m down.
- Giant lodes: two coal lodes lie 250 to 700 m from the world's start, in the lowlands, and ten more over the planet.
Any pickaxe breaks it.
What it is for
| Use | How much |
|---|---|
| Fuel | a cubic metre burns 60 s (wood: 12 s) |
| Reducer in the Furnace | 4 voxels per iron, copper, gold or lithium ingot; 8 per titanium ingot |
| Steel | an iron ingot and 2 coal |
| Torches | one voxel on a stick: 4 torches |
| Silicon | 16 voxels of sand and 8 coal |
No coal around? Burn logs into Charcoal: it does every one of these jobs.
