How much does a food feed?
Each food is a real portion with its calories. The game turns it into food points on your 100-point bar (2000 kcal in all, 20 kcal a point): a raw steak is 625 kcal but you absorb half of raw meat and fish, so it gives 16 points; once cooked it gives all 31. Proteins and fats also add to your hidden reserve, which is spent before the bar.
Each meal also keeps the bar from dropping on its own for a while (the table calls it satiety). Raw meat holds it a few seconds, bread 3 minutes, cooked meat 3 to 5 minutes. Effort such as sprinting still costs food. The time is shortened or lengthened by the difficulty.

What feeds best?
- Bear steak (cooked bear meat): 780 kcal, 39 points, full for 5.5 minutes. The most filling meat there is.
- Cooked steak (cow): 31 points, 5 minutes. Cows are everywhere in plains and forests, so this is the standard meal.
- Bread: 33 points, 3 minutes. Three wheat in a row in the craft grid, and wheat can be farmed.
- Mushroom stew: 20 points, 4.5 minutes. A red and a brown mushroom over a bowl.
- Snacks: an apple (5 points, 1.5 minutes), berries (5 points, 40 seconds), mushrooms and kelp (1 to 2 points).
- Milk: a bucket with at least 16 voxels of milk is drunk with the right mouse button (crouch to pour it out instead): 8 points and 8 health, even when the bar is full.
How do I cook?
- 1
Make a campfire
Sticks and logs in the craft grid, as in the recipe below. Place it on the ground like a chest.
- 2
Open it and load it
Right-click the campfire. Put the raw food in the Raw food slot and wood or coal in the Fuel slot. A block of coal burns 15 seconds, a block of wood 6 seconds.
- 3
Wait 12 seconds
The food turns on a spit above the flames. The cooked result appears in the Cooked food slot.
- 4
Take it and eat
Move the cooked food to your hotbar, hold it and right-click.
How to get it
3 sticks in a teepee over a row of 3 logs. Set it down, right click it, put raw food and fuel (wood, planks, sticks or coal): 12 s a piece.
What it is for
Cooked steak gives 31 food points and keeps the hunger bar still for 5 minutes; raw, 16 points and 30 seconds.
Why it exists
Cooking is the first big step of survival, and you watch your food turn golden on the spit.
The fireplace (2 × 2 m) cooks the same way in 12 seconds while it burns. A creature killed in lava drops its meat already cooked.
Where does food come from?
- Cows: 2 to 3 raw steaks (and 1 to 2 leathers). Sheep: 1 to 2 raw mutton. Goats: 0 to 2. Kangaroos: 1 to 2 raw steaks. Rabbits, chickens: 1 each.
- Bears: 1 to 3 bear meat. Giant crabs: 1 to 2 claws. Octopuses: 1 to 3 tentacles. Behemoths: 4 to 8 raw steaks.
- Fish: salmon and cod drop a fillet, tropical fish and clownfish a tropical fish. Everything raw can be cooked on the campfire; a raw egg (from hens) fries into a fried egg.
- Plants: apples fall now and then from oak and birch leaves, berry bushes give 1 to 3 berries and grow back, bread comes from wheat, honey bottles from a beehive and a glass bottle.
