Fireplace
A 2 m hearth against a wall: it burns logs slowly, heats and lights the room with flickering light, and cooks.
In the game
How to get it
Brick: five bricks round the hearth, then rock, an iron ingot and rock below. Stone: seven cells of rock round the hearth and an iron ingot at the bottom. Feed it wood, planks, sticks, coal or charcoal.
What it is for
Heats a closed room against the cold, lights it 14 m around (no monster appears there), cooks on its spit and gridiron in 12 s.
Why it exists
The heart of a house: warmth, light and food in one.
The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).
The fireplace is a hearth with jambs, a lintel, an oak mantel and a hood up to the ceiling, andirons, a spit and a grill.

How it works
- 2 m × 2 m, against a wall.
- Fuel: logs, planks, sticks, coal or charcoal -- burnt one at a time, about 40 times slower than a furnace: a cubic metre of wood lasts about 4 minutes, of coal about 10.
- It keeps burning when nobody is around.
- Heat: warms the room around it (see Cold and heat).
- Light: its fire flickers and makes the room scintillate; no monster appears within 14 m.
- Cooking: raw meat on the spit, fish, crab, tentacles and eggs on the gridiron, 12 s a piece (see Cooking).
A stone hearth under a chimney: its fire burns log by log, slowly, and its flickering light fills the room; the smoke goes up the flue. Raw food in the hearth cooks on the spit or the gridiron while it burns.
