How to tame and breed animals

Every friendly animal wants a particular food. Feed it with a right click: it may follow you for good, or look for a partner and have a baby.

In short

  • Tame with a right click and food: bone for a dog, raw fish for a cat, seeds or berries for a parrot, apple or sugar for a horse.
  • Breed two adults of one species by feeding both (wheat for cows, sheep, goats and horses; seeds for hens). The baby grows up in 20 minutes.
  • Shear sheep (1 to 3 wool), milk cows and goats with a bucket (16 voxels each time), pick up eggs hens lay.
  • Bees need a beehive and flowers within 8 m. Monsters never breed: they only appear on their own.

How do I tame an animal?

Hold the food and right click the animal. Each feeding uses up the food, tamed or not; it is a roll, so you may need several.

A tamed companion carries your name. Right click it with an empty hand to make it sit or follow. The dog defends you, the cat hunts ghosts and bats, the parrot warns you of a monster. A horse can be tamed but not ridden yet.

How do I breed animals?

  1. 1

    Feed the first adult

Right click it with its breeding food. Hearts appear: it is in love for 30 seconds.

  2. 2

    Feed a second one

Another adult of the same species, within 8 m, with the same food, in that time.

  3. 3

    A baby is born

Half the size, it follows its mother and grows up in 20 minutes. Feeding a baby makes it one tenth older.

  4. 4

    Wait before the next

After a birth the parents wait 5 minutes.

How do I get wool, milk and eggs?

  • Wool: right click a sheep with shears (iron or titanium). 1 to 3 wool. The fleece grows back in about 5 minutes, faster while it grazes.
  • Milk: right click a cow or a goat with a bucket. Each milking adds 16 voxels; one animal gives again after 60 seconds. A full bucket holds 64.
  • Eggs: an adult hen lays an egg on the ground every 5 to 10 minutes while you are around. Fry it on a campfire.
  • A hay bale heals cows, sheep and goats; berries heal hens; meat heals the dog.

How do I keep bees?

A wild bee nest hangs under some oak and birch crowns. Break it for honeycombs (about one per four voxels), but its bees turn on you. Craft a beehive from planks and three honeycombs and place it near flowers.

Beehive

How to get it

Two rows of planks around three honeycombs taken from a wild bee nest (found under oak and birch crowns). Set it among flowers.

What it is for

Honeycombs from 30 s each (a meadow of flowers within 8 m) to 6.7 minutes (one flower); with glass in its first slot, honey bottles instead.

Why it exists

Honey and wax without breaking nests -- and bees for your garden.

The hive makes one honeycomb per 30 seconds to 6.7 minutes: the more flowers within 8 m, the faster (one flower: 6.7 minutes). Put 16 voxels of glass in its glass slot and it fills a honey bottle instead. A honeycomb melted down gives wax.

Questions

Why is nothing happening when I feed an animal?

It may be full, or in its 5 minute rest after a birth. A dog or a cat only breeds once tamed.

Can I breed monsters?

No. Monsters only appear on their own.

Is there a limit?

The server keeps up to 600 tamed or bred animals; past that, no more births or taming.
