Survival · How it works
Survive
Health, hunger, air, falls, being knocked out and waking up: the rules of survival.
In the game
How to get it
Keep your hunger above 75 and your health comes back by itself. Falls hurt beyond 3.5 m; under water you hold your breath 20 s. At 0 health you are knocked out: Wake up brings you back to your bed or to the start.
What it is for
Eat cooked food (it fills more and keeps you full longer) and sleep in a bed at night so that you wake up at home.
Why it exists
The basics of survival, which the difficulty level makes softer or harder.
The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).
In survival you have three gauges: health (left of the hotbar), hunger (right) and, when your head is under water, air.
Health (100)
- Creatures, players, arrows, lava, fire, falls, drowning and cold hurt you. After a hit you are safe for 0.4 s.
- Health comes back on its own while hunger is 75 or more: slowly, then up to 2 points a second, faster with a full stomach -- and it costs food.
- Your armor takes part of the blows of creatures and weapons, never of falls, drowning or hunger.
Hunger (100)
- A full bar is a day of food. Running costs 0.1 point a metre (a kilometre of sprint is a whole bar); jumping, swimming and healing cost too, and the difficulty adds a slow burn at rest.
- Under 30 you cannot sprint. At 0 you lose 3 health every 3 seconds: down to 5 health at Normal, to death from Hard up.
- Every food fills its own amount and keeps the bar still for a while: see Food and Cooking.
Air (20 s)
With your eyes in water you hold your breath 20 seconds; then you lose 8 health a second. Out of the water your breath comes back in about 4 seconds.
Falls and other dangers
| Danger | What it costs |
|---|---|
| A fall | nothing up to 3.5 m, then 6 health per extra metre (about 20 m kills) |
| Deep water under you | cancels the fall; lava only halves it |
| A wall at speed | 3 per m/s beyond 7 m/s |
| Your head in a block | 5 every half second |
| Lava | 15 a hit |
| Cold below -25 °C | slowly, down to 5 health -- see Cold and heat |
Knocked out
At 0 health the screen goes dark: Knocked out, with the cause and the time you survived. Wake up brings you back with full health, hunger and air -- beside the bed you last slept in at night, or at the world's start. You keep what you carried.
Difficulty
Six levels from Easy (no monsters, hunger stops at half health) to Terrible. See Difficulty.
