Neptune and Triton
Night-blue Neptune in the sky; on Triton, a pink cap of nitrogen frost where geysers erupt, a dimpled cantaloupe ground, frozen lakes.
In the game
How to get it
Phase 4, with Uranus's glacite: land on Triton, Neptune's captured moon.
What it is for
Tritonite, thrown out of the ground by the geysers; a glide in the winds.
Why it exists
The coldest ground of the game; geysers that throw you up; gusts that toss gliders.
The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).
Triton orbits Neptune backwards -- a captured world, pink and frozen, where the ground itself erupts.
Triton's lands
- Cantaloupe terrain in the north: bowls 40 to 600 m wide like a melon's skin, long ridges across.
- The polar cap in the south: smooth pink nitrogen frost streaked dark downwind of its geysers.
- Frozen lakes: round walled plains of glassy nitrogen ice 6 to 14 km wide, three terraces up to the land.
The geysers
Each vent of the cap erupts on its own timetable, every 1.5 to 3.5 minutes, for 14 s: a plume 60 m tall, a rumble. Whoever stands over the mouth is thrown high; tritonite crystals fly out and fall back around the vent. The Nitrogen seal dives where one is about to blow. See Triton: nitrogen geysers.
Winds
Gusts jolt whoever flies, every few seconds: hold your line. See Glide in Neptune's winds.
The cold
-238 to -235 °C: colder than the Thermal suit stands (-230 °C). Wear it with armour carrying the Glacite alloy from Miranda: each piece holds 40 °C more.
