Triton: nitrogen geysers
On Triton's pink polar cap, nitrogen geysers erupt on their own timetables: a plume 60 m tall for 14 s, throwing tritonite.
In the game
How to get it
In Triton's orbit, choose the landing place Geysers at your ship's navigation table: the shuttle sets down 40 m from a vent of the southern cap. A vent is a dark mouth 3 to 5 m wide under a rim of vent rock, a dark streak running east of it. Wait near it: the Nitrogen seal dives where one is about to blow.
What it is for
The geysers throw tritonite crystals that fall back around the vent: pick them up.
Why it exists
The ground of Triton breathes: stand clear, or ride it.
The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).
Triton's geysers are real: Voyager 2 saw them.
An eruption
- Every 1.5 to 3.5 minutes, each vent its own.
- 14 s of plume, a rumble you feel.
- Over the mouth you are thrown 14 m/s up -- a little cold, a long fall in low gravity.
- 1 to 3 tritonite crystals fly out at the start.
Progress
Done when you stand on Triton's ground.
