Uranus and Miranda
Uranus, turquoise and lying on its side, in a black sky; on its moon Miranda, the tallest cliff of the system, and a rain of diamonds now and then.
In the game
How to get it
Phase 4, the icy far reaches: land on Miranda, Uranus's small moon (low gravity: 0.5 m/s²).
What it is for
Glacite, from the diamonds of the diamond rain or the crystal mammoths' fleece; the great jump off Verona Rupes.
Why it exists
Cold that freezes everything, diamonds falling like hail -- and the jump of a lifetime.
The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).
Miranda looks broken and glued back together; above it hangs Uranus, the giant lying on its side.
Miranda's lands
- Old cratered plains of grey ice dust.
- Coronae: three racetracks of grooves, dark and bright bands of ice 150 m apart.
- Verona Rupes, the great cliff: a sheer wall of layered ice ~440 m tall (20 km in reality) along 17 km of the Inverness corona's edge, from its plateau at 470 m to a plain at 30 m. Beyond its ends the plateau ramps down: you can walk up. See Miranda: the 20 km cliff.
The diamond rain
Every 15 minutes, for 75 s, diamonds fall (warned 40 s before): under the open sky the hail hurts, and glacite-hearted diamonds land around you. See The diamond rain.
The sky
No air: a black sky, Uranus huge and turquoise with its thin dark rings.
Dangers
| Danger | What to do |
|---|---|
| No air | a sealed suit |
| Cold: -213 to -187 °C | the Thermal suit |
| The diamond hail | a roof while it falls |
Miranda's Glacite is the way further out: Triton and Pluto are colder than any suit alone.
