Crystal mammoth
A woolly giant of Miranda whose back grows glacite crystals. Herds graze peacefully; shear one to collect glacite, or let a grid gather the crystals it drops by itself.

How to get it
Herds roam Miranda's plains. Use shears on a mammoth to take 1 or 2 crystal fleece; it regrows in about 8 minutes of grazing. Feed it crystal or quartz to heal or breed it, and lead it on a leash.
What it is for
A renewable source of glacite: the Furnace melts its crystal fleece into glacite ingots, the metal of Miranda's alloy and of the fusion magnets. A grown mammoth also drops a crystal fleece by itself every 10 to 14 minutes. Killed, it drops its fleece, fur and meat.
Why it exists
Glacite without strip-mining: a herd tended is a mine that never runs out.

Tips
It is neutral: strike one and the whole herd charges. Shear calmly and keep your weapon away.
How to farm it
A ranch on Miranda: lead mammoths on a leash into a fenced pen, breed them with crystal or quartz, and lay an OVM grid under the pen. Each adult drops a crystal fleece every 10 to 14 minutes on its own -- the full-auto farm; shears give 1 or 2 every 8 minutes of grazing, about three times faster.
