Tilled field
Farmland: one square metre tilled with a shovel, sown with a single seed.
In the game
How to get it
Right click grass or bare soil with a shovel: the aligned square metre becomes farmland. Right click it with one seed to sow the whole square metre.
What it is for
Grow wheat, flax and cotton: four stages of 2 to 4 minutes each, even while you are away.
Why it exists
A field is food and fibre you do not have to search for.
The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).
A tilled field is the soil of your crops.
Tilling
Hold any shovel and right click grass, dirt, podzol, moss or leaf litter: the aligned 1 m square becomes farmland. There is no hoe: the shovel does it.
Sowing
Right click the farmland with one seed: the whole square metre is sown. Wheat, Flax and Cotton seeds all grow the same way.
Growing
- Four stages, each after 2 to 4 minutes. The field keeps growing when nobody is near and across server restarts.
- Bone meal or bat guano (right click) advances a stage at once (see Bone meal).
- Fields grow best between 12 and 28 °C, slower in the cold or the dry, not at all below 2 °C (see Cold and heat).
- A crop with no farmland under it falls. Breaking farmland gives dirt back.
Harvest
Break the ripe crop: wheat gives 1 to 3 wheat, 1 or 2 seeds and a straw; flax 1 or 2 flax and 1 or 2 seeds; cotton 1 to 3 cotton and 1 or 2 seeds. An unripe crop only gives its seed back.
Watch out
Four crops or more within 8 m make a field: at night scarecrows can rise there.
