The round planet: walk around it, fly off it

The Earth of Openworld is a real sphere. Walk straight and you come back to where you started. Climb high enough and the ground gives way to space.

In short

  • The planet has a radius of 1000 km: 6,283 km around the equator and about 12.6 million km² of surface.
  • On foot a lap takes roughly 400 hours of non-stop walking. The horizon is about 1.8 km away.
  • Above 1012 m the ground gives way to the planet seen from space. A rocket takes you further.
  • The Moon is a world of its own: radius 273 km, gravity 1.62 m/s², a black sky and no weather. Your ship in orbit is a third place.

How big is the planet?

  • 1000 kmradius of the Earth
  • 6,283 kmaround the equator
  • 400 hto walk it, roughly
  • 25 minfor one day and night

The planet is 6.371 times smaller than the real Earth, which keeps it travelable, and it is closed on itself: there is no edge of the map and no wall. Under your feet the ground is flat and square, a voxel is 0.25 m everywhere, and the game does the bending. Crossing an edge of the underlying cube turns your heading and your speed at once, without a visible jump. At 8 spots of the planet the grid has a gap, and the game puts deep ocean and mist over 2 km there. A server admin can still set a border.

Can I walk around the whole world?

Yes. You walk at 4.25 m/s and sprint at 5.61 m/s, so a lap of the equator takes about 400 hours on foot, or about 310 hours sprinting, if your hunger lets you: a kilometre of sprint costs a full bar of food. On the way you meet seas, mountain chains, deserts and forests. To skip the walk, /tp LON LAT takes you to a longitude and a latitude in degrees (and an altitude if you add one), and /tp earth brings you to the spawn point.

Where does space start?

  1. 1

    Climb

Columns of ground are 512 m tall. 500 m above their top, at 1012 m, no ground is loaded any more: the terrain is unloaded at once and only the planet is left, drawn from the real map of your world. You can see it curve.

  2. 2

    Take a rocket

Light the engine and the autopilot climbs, turns and cuts the engine. The air stops at 80 km and the sky goes black. The rocket page and the rocket guide have everything. For the Moon trip, see go to the Moon.

  3. 3

    Or fly as a spectre

/gamemode spectre lets you cross the sky and space at the speed you pick, with the wheel. It is a sightseeing tour, with no landing.

  4. 4

    Come back down

Under 1012 m the ground streams in again. A spectre is held at 982 m until the ground under it is loaded, so you never fall through the void.

What are the worlds you can stand on?

Each world is a map of its own, with its own generator and its own saved edits. On a server, the travel rules can close space or the Moon to some players.

What is the Moon like?

  • A place you can really stand on: craters, dark plains and lava tubes (see caves), 273 km in radius, so a lap is about 1,715 km.
  • Gravity is 1.62 m/s², a sixth of the Earth's: you jump much higher.
  • A black sky in broad daylight, no weather, and the Earth hanging above you, going through its phases. The Moon always shows the same face to the Earth.
  • Its own ores: helium-3, titanium, iron, ice near the poles and gems (see where to find ores).
  • It takes about 27 days of 25 minutes to orbit the Earth, and the Sun rises and sets there about once a lunar month (see weather and day/night).

What about orbit and ships?

Once your rocket is in a stable orbit with the engine off, you can build your own ship there (see orbital ships): a cube of 64 m in a world of its own, with blocks, chests and machines as anywhere else, and the planet in the window. It is a place, not a vehicle: it never lands. The space station guide tells the story, and the round planet guide goes deeper into how cubes fit on a sphere.

Questions

Is there a world border?

No, not by itself: the planet is round and closed on itself. A server admin can set a border on a server.

How far is the horizon?

About 1.8 km from eye level, closer than on the real Earth, since the planet is smaller.

How high can I go without a rocket?

Past 1012 m no ground is loaded any more. A rocket takes you there properly, and spectre mode lets you look around.

How long does it take to get to the Moon?

A few seconds in spectre mode at full speed. By rocket, hours of flight that the game warps into minutes.
