Play with friends: local network, global network, servers

Your solo world can welcome friends in two clicks, at home or across the planet. Or you can join a server that stays on without you.

In short

  • Open your solo world from the pause menu: Local network for friends in the same home, Global network for friends anywhere, with a code and a password.
  • Friends join with Multiplayer: Direct connect with your address on LAN, Join a friend (global network) with your code.
  • To join a server, add or type its address (the default port is 24710); a red Incompatible card means the version differs.
  • Everybody needs the game, an Openworld account, and the same version.

What are the ways to play together?

  • Your solo world on the local network (LAN): friends in the same home or on the same network connect to your computer by its address.
  • Your solo world on the global network: friends anywhere join with a code and a password, through Openworld's relay servers.
  • A server: a world that stays on, with roles, homes and protected zones. You join it by its address. Hosting one is covered in the server guide.
  • Whatever you pick, each player needs the game, an Openworld account and the same version. Mac, Windows and Linux play together.

How do I open my world to friends at home?

  1. 1

    Open the hosting menu

In your solo world press Esc, then Host on network. The screen Play with your friends asks where your friends are.

  2. 2

    Choose Local network

Press Open to local network. A port is picked for you; Advanced lets you type one. The panel Hosted on local network then lists the addresses to give to your friends, each with a Copy button, and counts the guests.

  3. 3

    Your friends join

In their game: Multiplayer, Direct connect, paste your address with its port, Join. You get a message each time someone arrives or leaves.

  4. 4

    Stop when you want

Press Stop hosting, or simply leave your world: everyone is disconnected when the host goes.

How do I play with friends who are far away?

  1. 1

    Choose Global network

In the same hosting menu, press Play with friends far away under Global network. The first time, the game asks to turn on statistics (bandwidth, ping) for the session, because your friends' traffic goes through our relay servers: press Enable for this session.

  2. 2

    Share the code

After a few seconds the panel shows a code (nine letters, written like YHB-OLP-FTR) and a password (ten letters and digits). Copy invitation copies a ready message to paste to your friends.

  3. 3

    Your friends join

In their game: Multiplayer, Join a friend (global network), type the code and the password (or paste the whole invitation), press Check: the game shows the world's host, the players already there, the relay and its ping. Then Join.

  4. 4

    Manage the session

Change code gives a new code and password: friends already connected stay, the old code stops working. Statistics shows players, ping, bandwidth and volume, and lets you kick or ban a player.

Local network

  • Friends in the same home or on the same network.
  • Nothing to set up: the game lists the addresses.
  • Works on the same Wi-Fi; the host's firewall may ask to allow the game.

Global network

  • Friends anywhere in the world, with a code and a password.
  • Needs an Internet connection, and the global network must be available for your account (the game says so otherwise).
  • The number of friends is shown as Friends: n / max; friends at home can still use the local address.

How do I join a server?

  • Multiplayer lists your servers with their picture, name, description, players out of slots, and ping.
  • Join enters the selected server (a double click works too). Direct connect joins an address once without saving it. Add saves a name and an address; Edit, Delete and Refresh do what they say.
  • An address is an IPv4, an IPv6 or a domain name, with the port after a colon if it is not the default 24710: for example 192.168.1.20 or example.com:24710.
  • A red Incompatible card means the server runs another version: the game tells you which one to launch from the launcher.
  • Servers check your Openworld account. Some run offline, without accounts: you keep the name you type and everyone wears the default skin.
  • 24710default UDP port of a server
  • 100player slots on a server by default
  • 9 lettersin a global network code, plus a 10-character password

What changes in a shared world?

  • You see each other with your skins. T opens the chat, Tab lists the players, M opens the map. Commands are in Commands.
  • In a world you host, you are the SuperAdmin and your guests are regular players. They arrive in the world's game mode.
  • Each player is saved by account: your friends come back to their own spot and their own bag.
  • While your world is hosted, time does not stop when you open the pause menu. The night keeps falling for everyone.

Questions

How many friends can join my world?

It is your own computer that runs the world for everyone, so keep it to a few friends. On the global network the game shows Friends: n / max, and the maximum depends on your account. A dedicated server is set up for 100 players by default.

Do my friends need an account on a LAN?

Yes. Their account is checked online like on any server. Servers started with the offline option are the exception: no accounts, everyone in the default skin.

What if a friend sees Incompatible?

Their game and your world run different versions. Everyone picks the same version in the launcher, using the version chip next to Play.
