Getting started

The interface: gauges, inventory, recipes and chests

What every gauge means, how the inventory and its craft grid work, where to find a recipe, and how to use a chest.

In short

  • Health sits left of the item bar, food right of it, and air appears above the food only when it runs low. Each gauge writes its points inside.
  • E opens the inventory: 12-slot bar, 36-slot bag, gear, and a 3 × 3 craft grid with a Recipes tab.
  • In Creative the inventory gains a catalogue tab and nothing is ever spent; in Survival you only have what you gathered.
  • Hover an item for its card, press I for the full one. A chest holds 36 slots, a large chest 72.

What is on the screen while I play?

  • The item bar at the bottom: 12 slots with their icons, chosen with the digit keys (1 to 9, then 0, -, =) or the wheel. The name of the item in your hand is shown above it.
  • Health to the left of the bar, food to the right. Each gauge has an icon that breaks down as the value drops, and the points left are written inside. A loss makes the gauge shake while a pale ghost drains behind it.
  • Air appears above the food only while it runs low: a bubble under water, in seconds. In the vacuum of a ship it becomes an oxygen bottle that empties and frosts.
  • Around the edges: the world you are on (Earth, Moon…), your altitude, the local time, a compass and the crosshair. Recent chat lines sit above the bar and fade away.
  • Health: 100 points. It mends by itself while your food is at 75 or more, and each point healed costs 0.8 food.
  • Food: 100 points, 20 kcal each. Sprinting, jumping, swimming and healing use it up. Under 30 you can no longer sprint; at 0 you lose 3 points every 3 seconds, down to a floor the difficulty sets (5 on Normal). Hold right click for 1.5 s to eat.
  • Falls: nothing up to 3.5 m, then 6 points per extra metre. Drowning: 20 s of air, then 8 points per second.

How does the inventory work?

  • E opens it, E or Esc closes it. The stack on your cursor is put away when you close; the craft grid gives back what it holds; what no longer fits falls at your feet.
  • In Survival it opens on what you own: the item bar (12 slots), the bag (36 slots, 3 rows of 12), the gear column (armor pieces, a wingsuit or camouflage, paragliders) with the protection, weight, speed and hunger it costs, and the crafting grid.
  • Left click takes or puts a whole stack (the same item merges, another one swaps). Right click takes half, or puts one. Drag with the left button to share a stack equally, with the right one to put one per slot. Shift + click sends a stack to the other side (bar to bag) or wears an armor piece. Double click gathers every identical item on the cursor.
  • Raw matter (stone, wood, dirt…) is counted in blocks of 64 voxels, up to 64 blocks per slot. Tools, weapons and armor wear out: when one is used up it disappears and a message says so.

Survival inventory

  • Opens on your bag, bar, gear and craft grid.
  • No catalogue: you only hold what you gathered or made.
  • Everything you place, eat or throw leaves your stack; breaking a block gives its matter back.

Creative inventory

  • Two tabs: Creative (the catalogue, with a category rail and a search field) and Inventory (the same as in Survival).
  • A click puts a full stack on the cursor, a right click adds one more, Shift + click sends it straight to your inventory.
  • Nothing is spent, and a stack dropped on the catalogue is thrown away.

How do I craft, and where is the recipe book?

  1. 1

    Lay the ingredients out

Put items in the 3 × 3 grid in the shape of the recipe. It works anywhere in the grid, and mirrored too. A cell takes one item, or 16 voxels of raw matter (a quarter of a block).

  2. 2

    Read the result

The result slot shows what you would make. If something is missing, the cells that lack it turn red and the card tells you why.

  3. 3

    Take it

Click the result: one craft lands on your cursor. Shift + click crafts as many as possible straight into your inventory.

  4. 4

    Look a recipe up

Open the Recipes tab next to the grid: one tab per family (Basics, Tools, Weapons and armor, Building, Furniture, Food…), cards drawn with the real items, machines with their operations, and a search. Click an ingredient to jump to the card that makes it.

What does the item card say?

  • Hover any item (inventory, chest, catalogue, craft grid): a card gives its name, its type, what it is for, its numbers (a tool: what it breaks, tier and speed; a weapon: hit, rate, range, damage; armor: material, protection, weight; food: hunger and satiety), the durability left, the quantity, and a line saying how to obtain it.
  • Press I on an item (or with it in your hand and the inventory closed) to open its wiki page: the game's tutorial (how to get it, what it is for, why it exists), the recipes and machines that make it, the creatures that drop it, the deposits where it lies, and what it is used for. A click on an item inside the page opens its own page.
  • Your inventory also shows where you stand on the progress path and the advised next step: see your progress and the in-game wiki.

How do chests work?

  • Right-click a chest to open it, even empty-handed. Other players see its lid lifted while you have it open.
  • The screen shows the chest's contents above, your bag and the item bar below. A click sends a stack to the other side, a right click half of it, drag and drop works too, Sort tidies the chest, and E closes it.
  • A chest holds 36 slots (3 rows of 12). Two chests side by side, facing the same way, make a large chest of 72 slots, never three. The contents live on the server and survive restarts; a broken chest spills what it held.
  • A blank key (two iron ingots) in the middle of the chest recipe gives a chest with a lock. Right-click it with a blank key to cut the key for it: from then on only someone holding that key can open it.

Chest

How to get it

Eight cells of wood or planks around an empty middle: a chest of that wood. A key in the middle makes a chest with a lock.

What it is for

Store everything your bag cannot carry; its contents stay on the server and survive restarts.

Why it exists

Your bag fills up fast: a base starts with a chest.

Questions

Why can't I sprint?

Your food is under 30 of 100. Eat something: a cooked steak, bread, berries or an apple will do.

Where did the stone I broke go?

On Earth, a broken block drops as items that fly a little toward you and are picked up when you walk over them. A full inventory leaves them on the ground.

How many slots do I have?

12 in the item bar and 36 in the bag (3 rows of 12), plus the armor, outfit and paraglider slots of the gear column.
