Keys and locks
Chests, doors and trapdoors with a lock: assign a key and only that key opens -- or breaks -- them.
In the game
How to get it
Two iron ingots in a column: two blank keys. A key in the middle of a chest, door or trapdoor recipe makes the locked version. Right click the placed lock with a key to assign it.
What it is for
Keep your things safe on a server: an assigned lock refuses whoever does not carry its key, even from the bag.
Why it exists
On a shared world, what is yours should stay yours.
The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).
Keys
Two iron ingots in a column: 2 blank keys. Blank keys stack; a cut key is alone in its slot.
Locked chests, doors and trapdoors
Put a blank key in the middle of the usual recipe:
| Locked item | Grid | You get |
|---|---|---|
| Chest with a lock | the ring of 8 wood or planks round a key | 1 |
| Door with a lock | two columns of 3 planks or metal plate, a key in the centre | 3 |
| Trapdoor with a lock | a cell, a key, a cell | 2 |
You see the lock on the model: a brass plate and keyhole, or a dark iron case on the chest.
Assigning a key
- A lock with no key assigned opens for everyone, like a plain one.
- Stand and right click it with a key: a blank key is cut for this lock; an already cut key is reused (one key can open several locks).
- From then on, only a player carrying that key -- in hand or anywhere in the bag -- can open it, or break it.
- A double chest is assigned one half at a time.
Good to know
There is no way to copy a key or to remove a lock: break the piece (with its key) and place it again.
