Survival

Death, respawn, beds and homes: coming back

Dying is not the end: you wake up at your respawn point with full gauges. Here is what you keep, how to choose where you come back, and how a bed helps.

In short

  • When your health reaches 0 a K.-O. screen shows the cause and your survival time. Press Wake up to come back at your respawn point.
  • You return with full health, food and air. Dying does not empty your inventory.
  • Your respawn point is the world spawn, unless you sleep in a bed at night or set it with /setplayerspawn.
  • When every player of the planet lies in a bed at night, the night passes. /sethome and /tph save places to come back to.

What happens when I die?

  • The world dims and a card titled Knocked out (K.-O. in French) shows what killed you and the time survived since you last woke up.
  • Two buttons: Wake up (active after one second) and Main menu. Wake up asks the server to move you to your respawn point.
  • You come back with a fresh body: full health, full food bar and full air. A spectator or a creative player is never hurt, only /kill works on them.
  • The causes: a fall, drowning, suffocation in a wall, lava, hunger, a creature or a player, the /kill command, flying a wingsuit into a wall or crashing under air gear, a rocket that blew up, stepping out of a rocket into space, or being stranded weightless without a jetpack.

Do I lose my things?

No rule empties your bag when you die: respawning only moves you and refills your gauges, and your hotbar, bag, armour and equipment stay with you. If you left the game while dead, you come back at the spawn with full health, as a respawn would. Remember where you died if you want to go back by /tph or on foot.

Where do I come back?

  • At your own spawn point if you have one: the last one set, either by sleeping in a bed at night (beside that bed) or with /setplayerspawn here.
  • Otherwise at the world spawn point, the same one new players start from. An admin can move it with /setworldspawn.

/setplayerspawn reset gives you back the world spawn point, and /spawn takes you to your spawn point at any time. Setting your own point needs the permission spawn.setown, which the Player role has by default.

How do I sleep in a bed?

  1. 1

    Craft and place a bed

Planks, wool and fabric in the craft grid. Place it like any piece of furniture. Two beds side by side make a double bed.

  2. 2

    Lie down at night

Right-click the bed. You lie under its blanket. By day you can lie down, but not sleep.

  3. 3

    Your respawn point is set

Lying in a bed at night sets your respawn point beside it. The game saves it with your player, so it survives a restart. It only works for a bed you are allowed to build at: in someone else’s protected zone it does not count.

  4. 4

    Skip the night

When every player on the planet lies in a bed at night, the screen fades to black and the clock jumps to the next sunrise. If anyone gets up, it is cancelled. Get up with Shift or Space.

What are homes?

Homes are named places you can come back to at any time, whether you died or not. You can have as many as your role allows.

CommandWhat it does
/sethome [NAME]Saves a home where you stand
/homesLists your homes
/tph [NAME] or /home [NAME]Teleports you to one of your homes
/delhome NAMEDeletes a home
/spawnTakes you to your spawn point

Questions

Do I lose my items when I die?

Dying does not empty your inventory. You respawn with full health, food and air, and your things with you.

How do I change where I respawn?

Sleep in a bed at night, or use /setplayerspawn here. /setplayerspawn reset gives back the world spawn point.

Can I skip the night?

Yes: when every player on the planet lies in a bed at night, the night passes and the world wakes up at sunrise.
