Top of the giant volcano
The roof of the Solar System: the caldera of Mars's giant volcano, about 470 m up.
In the game
How to get it
In Mars's orbit, at your ship's navigation table, choose the landing place Volcano: the shuttle sets down at the foot of the giant volcano (18° N, 134° W). Climb its 55 m basal cliff and its long flanks of old lava flows, and stand inside the rim of its caldera.
What it is for
The highest ground of the Solar System, and the view over all of Mars. Nothing else: some places you visit to say you were there.
Why it exists
Mars holds the greatest volcano of all; the game keeps the top of its world for it.
The same text the game shows in its progress tree and on the item's sheet (I).
The way up
A shield 6 km across, ringed by a cliff 55 m high; then concave flanks, steeper toward the top, ridged by radial lava flows; at the summit a caldera of nested pits, about 600 m across. Lesser shields stand elsewhere on Mars: none is as high. A dust storm over it hides everything: wait for it to pass.
